In 1788 Hannah More (1745-1833) "published anonymously 'Thoughts on the Importance of the Manners of the Great to General Society'. It proved phenomenally popular: the second edition sold out in six days, the third in four hours, and an eighth edition appeared in 1790. In admonishing the upper classes More made clear her belief in a hierarchical and deferential society and argued that a reformation of manners could be achieved only if the leaders of society reformed themselves." - ODNB
