"IN THE MOOD: The Kings of The Big Bands" by Colin
King, published by Caxton, London, in 2002 - first edition. Illustrated
and indexed hardback book with dust jacket.
This book is aimed at the swing-curious reader, it is not a
specialist book. It gives an overview of the history of Big Bands from Satch,
Bix, Jelly Roll, Fletch, Duke, Cab to Goodman, Basie, Miller, Whitman, Dorseys,
Artie Shaw, etc. It covers styles such as Latin and Western Swing (Cowboy Jazz)
as well as mainstream plus individual biographies on British Big Bands - Savoy
Orpheans, Jack Payne, Ambrose, Jack Hylton, Ted Heath, Billy Cotton and The
Squadronaires.
It's a great book if you are delving into Big Band for the
first time - lively design, great photos and an unplayed ten-track CD - but it
would disappoint a serious Swinger (so to speak!).
