~~~~~~~~
The Strand Magazine was a very popular monthly magazine founded by George Newnes and published in London, England from January 1891 – March 1950. It was the trendiest of the ‘illustrated periodicals’ that were popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras – for many years it enjoyed a circulation of more than 400,000 copies a month.
Its name was derived from the original offices which were situated in Burleigh Street, off The Strand, London. A typical issue contained a mixture of serialised stories for adults, general interest articles, and some material aimed at children. A lot of well-known fiction was first published and serialised in The Strand Magazine including the short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes and written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Other famous writers whose works featured in the magazine include H. G. Wells, Rudyard Kipling, Agatha Christie, E. Nesbitt, even Winston Churchill. Each issue was very well illustrated with a typical magazine containing over 100 illustrations.
