The use of polymeric materials
in construction began in the middle of the last century. At the same time,
polypropylene fibre appeared a little later, and its main use is to reinforce
concrete to prevent cracking. Initially, the fibre was used in road
construction, where the material showed excellent results. Subsequently, the
composition is also used in the construction and reconstruction of various
buildings, which has resulted in a solution with excellent performance.
In the process of construction
work with concrete, one of the important steps is shrinkage reinforcement,
which reduces the formation of cracks in the process of concrete shrinkage.
While steel reinforcing mesh and steel fibre were previously used for this
purpose, today polypropylene fibre has taken over the primacy palette - the
price of this fibre for concrete and high technical properties that allow it to
successfully compete with metal fibre and mesh.
Polypropylene fibre is a
synthetic fibre with a diameter of about 20 microns, made by extrusion from
isotactic polypropylene and treated with a special composition to improve
adhesion in the concrete matrix.

Microfibers for concrete have a
wide range of applications including:
- in floors,
- in mortars,
- in thin-layer masses,
- as an additive to mortars and
masonry and plastering compounds,
- as an additive in wet shotcrete,
- in the production of roof tiles,
paving tiles, curbs, among others,
- in the construction of roads,
parking lots, airports, industrial floors, ramps, factory yards,
- in the construction of ceilings,
retaining walls, concrete pours, production of cellular concrete,
- in the construction of tunnels,
riverbanks, breakwaters, water reservoirs.
Advantages of Fibres:
- millions of short thin fibres form a spatial grid in the concrete mix,
which performs the role of micro reinforcement eliminating the need for
anti-shrinkage mesh steel
- reduce shrinkage cracking
- eliminate surface cracking
- increase waterproofing and strength
- increase abrasion and impact resistance
- increase resistance to freezing
- reduce corrosion of concrete and reinforcing steel
- increase the durability of concrete and reinforced concrete elements
- reduce construction and labour costs
