Rosin (Greek colophony from the name of Ionic Kolofon colony) - soft resin of natural origin, residue after distilling turpentine from conifer resin (mainly pine).
Rosin is a fragile substance, very brittle, glassy, translucent, from yellow to dark red to dark brown.
It has a characteristic resinous fragrance. It is also fusible and flammable. It dissolves well in most organic solvents: acetone, amyl, butyl, ethyl and methyl alcohol, gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, ethyl ether, xylene, toluene and turpentine oil. It does not dissolve in water. Colophony saponify hot solutions of bases.

Application:
in the pharmacy recipe, as a component of the ESP Emplastrum meliloti, FP VI
as a very good flux when soldering with lead-tin alloy
for rubbing strings of string instruments to increase the roughness of the bristle and thereby increase its grip to the strings
