About GATO MIKIO
Gato Mikio was originally founded in 1908 as Gato Sawmill in Yamanaka Hot Spring, a town famed for wood turning.
Respecting the intentions and spirit of the original Kijishi (wood-turners), we never compromise on the quality of the woodwork completed by our craftsmen.
We are proud of the quality of our materials, the precision of our wooden base work, and the clear look of our wiped lacquer finishes.
Only after each element has been completed perfectly, do we assemble them together to create our unique handcrafts.
We continue to create authentic lacquerware pieces, pursuing functionality with traditional skills, and artistry based on Japanese aesthetic senses.
About MUSUBI
The motifs of MUSUBI's single flower vases are the five elements in nature: soil, water, the sun, air, and wind. MUSUBI, meaning the spiritual power of generating and raising everything, was designed based on the idea of immutability.
This is one of the concepts of Haikai verse, which Basho Matsuo founded, who was a japanese Haiku poet of the 17th century.
The idea of immutability states that all phenomena do not exist independently, but exist in one of two conflicting forms: life and death, with each one repeating, rising and falling.
As plants and flowers repeat the cycle of life and death with various natural components, we hope that cut plants and flowers can live out their lives in MUSUBI vases for people to appreciate them.
