Measuring and Installation Tips

How much will you need for your cabinet?

It's best to try to wrap the cabinet with as few seams as possible, so normally you'll want to just measure the perimeter of the cabinet (top, bottom, and both sides), and order a piece of tolex long enough to wrap in one piece. For example if you have a cabinet 16in high, 24in wide and 12in deep, you'll need a piece at least 80in long (24+16+24+16 = 80). Since tolex is sold per yd, (36") you would need 3yds.

Note that this example cabinet is just 12in deep so our 18in wide material should give you plenty to work with. Just remember to allow for the front and rear wrap around. Also, if your cabinet has a front and/or rear panel, you'll need to add material accordingly.

What glue?

Latex contact cement is the preferred choice. Its water soluble which means that it cleans up easy and there's no caustic fumes, and it's easy to find at just about any hardware store or home center. Just make sure you get the latex kind - the label will say water based or non-flammable. Follow the directions on the can. Apply with a disposable brush for small projects or a small roller for larger areas.
