P-51D Mustang 400mm Wingspan Balsa Wood Laser Cut RC Warbird Aeroplane KIT. Superior Laser Cut Production means the kit parts ‘Fit’ perfectly. We get terrific feedback regard how these models ‘go together’.

The model is designed for RC whereas many micro RC Models are converted from Free Flight to RC, this kit is for Radio Control. Of course, modellers being modellers means a few have been built and flown Free Flight. Radio Control Kits converted to FREE FLIGHT where will it all end?

Time Warp? - Please note although we are using a newer Bass Wood, the appearance of a warp sheet might still occur. Please do not panic if it does. Its because most of the 'meat' is cut from the slab of parts.

Please note currently in this kit the Bass Wood ( Lite Ply) in only 2 ply - not 3 ply. This means the parts can look warped as they are so thin when removed from the sheet. Don't panic. You can flatten them by Ironing them, but in actual fact they do straighten out by the accuracy of assembly. The warped sheet would not happen if it was 3 ply, but these kits use special light 2 ply to keep the model down to a low flying weight.

The warped sheet is not really a warped sheet in the sense of what we are used too. So much 'meat' is taken away from sheet to cut the thin parts it leaves no strength in the framing of the parts. We have build the models ourselves ( not a Mustang yet) but all the others and the bent sheets are not a problem. The parts are thin - They would be impossible to cut if die printed. But being so thin, handling with care is very important and if you fumble and break a former, its easy to fix with cyano. Don't think the expert builders don't do this, because they do. The feedback for the entire range is good. Except for one Neutral Feedback with a comment saying 'hard to build' . While feedback is the down to how the end user feels what is hard to build for one person is easy to build for another. Certainly if you have only built a 40 size model before then micro modelling has new challenges. Leaving poor feedback because a model is found hard to build is probably unfair or can we expect the same when a customer finds it to easy to build? and they wanted something harder to build? The model is what it is and it is a very good price for what it is. Try one and see. What you make of it is down to your abilities.

The Pictorial Chinese Instructions are available by download or eMail After purchase we email you the link to download the instructions. Its saves paper and costs. If you do not receive the link or mailed instructions, please contact us and we will remedy the matter.

Those following Steve Webb Models will know that SWM writes ‘EXTRA INSTRUCTIONS’ for these models. At this date we do not have ‘EXTRA INSTRUCTIONS’ available for this model, but we do have a download of the originals available. Eventually our ‘EXTRA INSTRUCTIONS’ will be available as a down load and purchasable printed version.

Overview

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. The Mustang was designed in 1940 by North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a requirement of the British Purchasing Commission. The Purchasing Commission approached North American Aviation to build Curtiss P-40 fighters under license for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Rather than build an old design from another company, North American Aviation proposed the design and production of a more modern fighter. The prototype NA-73X airframe was rolled out on 9 September 1940, 102 days after the contract was signed, and first flew on 26 October.

The Mustang was designed to use the Allison V-1710 engine (which had limited high-altitude performance in its earlier variants). The aircraft was first flown operationally by the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a tactical-reconnaissance aircraft and fighter-bomber (Mustang Mk I). Replacing the Allison with a Rolls-Royce Merlin resulted in the P-51B/C (Mustang Mk III) model and transformed the aircraft's performance at altitudes above 15,000 ft (4,600 m) (without sacrificing range), allowing it to compete with the Luftwaffe's fighters. The definitive version, the P-51D, was powered by the Packard V-1650-7, a license-built version of the two-speed two-stage-supercharged Merlin 66, and was armed with six .50 calibre (12.7 mm) M2/AN Browning machine guns.

From late 1943, P-51Bs and P-51Cs (supplemented by P-51Ds from mid-1944) were used by the USAAF's Eighth Air Force to escort bombers in raids over Germany, while the RAF's Second Tactical Air Force and the USAAF's Ninth Air Force used the Merlin-powered Mustangs as fighter-bombers, roles in which the Mustang helped ensure Allied air superiority in 1944. The P-51 was also used by Allied air forces in the North African, Mediterranean, Italian and Pacific theatres. During World War II, Mustang pilots claimed to have destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft.

At the start of the Korean War, the Mustang, by then re-designated F-51, was the main fighter of the United Nations until jet fighters, including North American's F-86, took over this role; the Mustang then became a specialized fighter-bomber. Despite the advent of jet fighters, the Mustang remained in service with some air forces until the early 1980s. After the Korean War, Mustangs became popular civilian warbirds and air racing aircraft.
