L'etere dietilico, altrimenti noto come etere etilico, dietiletere o etossietano è un composto chimico (formula CH3-CH2-O-CH2-CH3) che a temperatura ambiente si presenta come un liquido incolore dall'odore caratteristico. È un composto estremamente infiammabile e nocivo con un basso punto di ebollizione . Viene comunemente utilizzato come solvente, e in passato è stato sfruttato per le sue capacità anestetiche.

A causa del suo elevato numero di celano (l'analogo del numero d' ottano per la benzina) pari a 85 - 96, l'etere dietilico viene impiegato anche come fluido di avvio nei motori diesel e benzina (in bombolette spray da spruzzare nel condotto di aspirazione prima dell'avvio) per i climi freddi. Esso è usato comunemente nelle estrazioni per via della sua bassa polarita' e miscibilita' con l' acqua.

Tuttavia anche l'etere dietilico presenta una moderata polarità capace di formare legami a idrogeno, ma solamente come accettore sull'ossigeno. Questa polarità non ha effetto sensibile sul punto di ebollizione che è lo stesso degli alcani con lo stesso peso molecolare. L'etere dietilico ha pressappoco la stessa solubilita' in H2O dell' 1-butanolo pari a circa 77 g/100 ml: questo è dovuta al fatto che hanno lo stesso numero di carbonii.

Modalità di impiego: Viene usato per detergere la cute prima dell'applicazione di cerotti adesivi o per facilitare la rimozione degli stessi. Trova impiego come solvente.

Avvertenze e indicazioni d'uso: Estremamente infiammabile. Nocivo. Può formare perossidi esplosivi. Nocivo per ingestione. L’esposizione ripetuta può provocare secchezza e screpolature della pelle. L’inalazione dei vapori può provocare sonnolenza e vertigini. Conservare fuori della portata dei bambini. Conservare lontano da fiamme e scintille. Non fumare. Non gettare i residui nelle fognature. Conservare il recipiente in luogo ben ventilato. Non impiegare in presenza di fiamma diretta e di apparecchiature elettriche in grado di produrre scintille. L’utilizzo è controindicato in caso di diabete mellito, insufficienza renale e gravi malattie epatiche.

Modalità di conservazione: A causa del p.e. relativamente basso e della elevata volatilità va conservato in contenitori a tenuta protetti dagli urti, dalla luce solare diretta. Tenere lontano da ossidanti, fonti di calore, fiamme libere e scintille.
