Wonderful piece of history offered up today. from 1582 or 1588 it is the two ages view of Jerusalem (Hierosolyma or Cuzumoharech by the Turks) which was created by the cartographers Braun & Hogenberg, and printed by Gottfried von Kempen in Cologne. There is a tremendous amount of descriptive glossary on the map itself as well as the full description sheet on the back of the framed map which gives a full descriptive story of the work. This map was created shortly after Jerusalem went under the control of the Ottoman Empire. On the left half of the sheet it shows the ancient city in the days of Christ with the haunting inclusion of the trek up toward the crucifiction in the lower left corner. The right half depicts the city in present day, with present day of course being 1582. There is inclusion of the many textual elements present in the day including verbiage in Greek, Cartouche and Latin. There is incredible minute detail to be found within the city. I have included a few magnified photos and could send others on request. I also have a sheet on the translation of the Cartouche Text. An additional descriptive name given to the map creation is: Hierosolyma, Clarissima Totius Orientis Civitas, Judaeae Metropolis. Which translated from Latin references: JERUSALEM, famous North Eastern States, the Jewish metropolis.
