Gorgeous translucent Calcified Jade.

Heavily mineral laden.

Shang Dynasty 1751 -1111 B.C.

According to an ancient Chinese classic, the Erh-ya, discs with large central perforation were called Yuan.  Although pi, huan, and yuan discs are usually flat, this Yuan has a raised ridge.  Because of the inner ridge, pieces similar to this one have on occasion been wrongly labeled cup stands, an identification which is not completely in error because of the Ching Dynasty ceramic cup stands made in imitation of the ancient yuan.  It does pose, however, the question of why there are two types of yuan, one with a flat surface and one with a raised ridge.

In ancient times the Yuan was probably thrown as a weapon.  Eventually the central perforation was cut out to facilitate carrying the disc when it was not in use, and in time the Yuan lost its convex shape and became solely a decorative object.  When the disc became a bracelet, a smooth raised ridge that made the disc more comfortable to wear was added around the central perforation.  This is evidenced not only by this Yuan but also by a similar one excavated at the Shang site of Hsiao-t'un.  it has not been uncommon to find stone Yuan on the arms of the deceased dating from early as Neolithic times.

Lo Chen-yu has suggested than Yuan also served as ceremonial objects when subjects greeted the King, a function which he feels is reflected in the composition of the original Chinese character Yuan.

Another speculation on this matter has been put forth by Shih Chang-ju.  Because excavation records show that large numbers of Yuan discs have been found in chariot pits, he has suggested that the roundness of the discs relates to their function as connecting pieces for several parts of the chariot.

Jackson's On Main History:

Our business was established in 1966 by Claude and William Jackson, father and son, in Hollywood, California. Claude Jackson (now deceased) was a well known West Coast artist who executed numerous fine works many depicting the great movie stars of early Hollywood. Several of his works have been published and those originals now reside in the collections of various noted individuals and institutions. Most notable probably is his depiction of Marilyn Monroe in his 'Red Kimono', 1975, published as the centerfold in Roger Taylor's anthology Marilyn in Art (1984). For years we operated as a mail order fine art distribution firm selling posters and other contemporary multiples. As time passed we diversified and grew and now we maintain a 3,000 square foot full service walk-in art and antique Gallery in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. We are fully staffed and equipped to provide prompt professional service and we guarantee ALL sales to be as described. We also are always interested in purchasing quality art works and we pay top dollar. If we can't buy it we will gladly consign it and work diligently for you to insure a prompt and fair sale. Please send pictures for quotes. In the meanwhile, Bid with confidence! We guarantee your full satisfaction with every sale.
