The Songs of Kabir
By Kabir (c. 15th century) Translated by Rabindranath Tagore
The Songs of Kabir is a collection of 100 poems attributed to the 15th-century Indian poet and mystic Kabir and translated by noted Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. Kabir was noted for combining elements of Sufism and Hinduism in his work. At the time of publication in 1915 all the poems were thought to have been written by Kabir. Scholars have since come to believe that only six are authentic, and that many of the remaining poems were likely written by followers of Kabir who were involved with the Bhakti movement in medieval India. There is also some concern that Tagore may have imparted theological perspectives prevalent at the time onto the works in his translations. Initially titled One Hundred Poems of Kabir, the book included an introduction by Evelyn Underhill and has become a classic in the West.
