Original vintage silver print photograph of the Ocean Liner SS Normandie under construction for the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique passenger steamship transport company, circa 1931. Born in Austria-Hungary, the modernist photographer Francois Kollar (1904-1979) moved to Paris in 1923, and worked briefly for the master arts printer Draeger, before opening his owner photography studio in 1928, aged 24. This image of the SS Normandie derives from the early part of his career when he was deeply immersed in the  European avant garde of the time, and produced a number of superb modernist images, including this image. Kollar's work is held in important institutional photography collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. With multiple Kollar studio stamps, and the remains of a Compagnie Generale Transatlantique label of the period affixed to the verso. This is an original vintage print from Kollar’s studio in 1931 – not a later reproduction. Similar Kollar vintage prints are occasionally offered at auction by Christies and Sotheby's, a recent auction result for a vintage Kollar silver print from the same era appears in the image set for reference.

Format: Upright. (223mm x 162mm)
