Emblem books are a category of mainly didactic illustrated book. The “emblems” they contain are symbolic pictures usually with accompanying text. They first appeared in Europe in the 16th century and enjoyed an enormous vogue for the next 200 years or more, when several thousand of both religious and secular nature were issued from printing presses throughout continental Europe. Whilst often expressing the personal values or morals of the individual author, they also communicate political, religious, military or other values and interests in ways that have to be decoded by the viewer. Emblem books exercised a huge influence on literature and the visual arts, and have long attracted the attention of scholars interested in painting, decorative arts, literature, illustrated books, iconography, symbolism, theories of representation, social and cultural history. The books are also closely related to the personal, symbolic picture-text combinations called devices, (known in Italy as imprese and in France as devises) and are also, therefore of interest to scholars of heraldry.
Collected together here on one data DVD are 70 of the finest examples of illustrated emblem books. All of these texts, in PDF format are 300dpi scans of the original pages so you will be reading each book exactly as per the originals.
