Although Rachmaninov had been an émigré since 1918 (he died in Beverly Hills in the USA, in 1943), his world musical significance was so great that in the USSR his works were published in small editions.

Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (Russian: Серге́й Васи́льевич Рахма́нинов, tr. Sergei Vasilyevich Rakhmaninov, 1 April [O.S. 20 March] 1873 – 28 March 1943) was a Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the late Romantic period. The influence of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev, Mussorgsky, and other Russian composers is seen in his early works, later giving way to a personal style notable for song-like melodicism, expressiveness and rich orchestral colors.

PAUL PABST Prussian pianist (1854 - 1897)
Paul Pabst studied in Köenigsberg with his father, August Pabst, with Anton Door in Vienna, and with Franz Lizst in Weimar. He is known primarily as the teacher of Nikolai Medtner, Alexander Goldenweiser and Konstantin Igumnov. And as a close friend and associate of Tchaikovsky who declared him to be "a pianist of divine elegance" and "a pianist from God".
