Desert Quandong

  (Santalum acuminatum)

Commonly known as the Desert Peach or Sweet Quandong,

Desert Quandong is an attractive, moderately vigorous shrub to small tree with slender,

pale green leathery leaves and fragrant cream coloured small flowers, followed by red

waxy fruit, the size of a large macadamia nut.

The fruit skin has a very distinctive flavour, is high in Vitamin C

and makes an excellent jam or may be dried and stored  for long periods,

(for up to 8 years). It has an aroma very similar to dried apricots.

The nut contains high amounts of complex oils, makes up for 40%

of the fruit weight and may be roasted and salted.

An excellent bush tucker fruit tree! Desert Quandong has a very wide distribution

and can be found in QLD, NSW, SA, WA and VIC.

The fruit and nut of this plant is important to many different indigenous groups,

which reflects the variety of indigenous names.

Whawilreceive?

You will receive 5 seeds, mixed sizes. Winter is the best time to plant.

Better results are achieved when the seed coat or shell is removed completely from the nut before planting.

A host tree such as Jam wattle or Mulga wattle or Casuarina She-oak will need to be planted close to the Quandong as the tree feeds off the roots of the host plants.

We have River she-oak, Jam Wattle and Mulga Wattle available in our store.
