This lighter was part of a gift set given by an executives of Foster Wheeler to executives of Shell Canada, in 1976. Foster Wheeler ordered 50 of them, specifically to be given to the chief personnel of a refinery. This one would still have been made in the US but the packaging would have been done in Canada (bi-lingual text on the box).

 

It is silver, and bears the Foster Wheeler logo, with the words ‘Safety First’, in green and black.

 

Foster Wheeler was a giant Swiss engineering firm which was founded in 1927. It was originally American; it was formed from the merger of the Power Specialty Company (which replaced American Water Works Supply Company, created by Pell and Ernest Foster in 1884) and the Wheeler Condenser & Engineering Company, which was created by Frederick Merriam Wheeler in 1891. It was originally based in New York City but later moved to New Jersey, then Bermuda, then Switzerland. In 2017, it was bought by the Wood Group.

 

The recipient of this lighter put it in a drawer and left it there. It has not been opened until today. So it has never been used, never had fuel in it. It is pristine.
