Jimi Hendrix {DVD} The Dick Cavett Show

Documentary focusing on legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix's appearances on 'The Dick Cavett Show', the first US network show to feature the musician. Directed by Bob Smeaton (awarded a Grammy for his work on 'The Beatles Anthology'), the release features full live performances from Hendrix of 'Izabella', 'Machine Gun' and 'Hear My Train a Comin''. As well as new interviews with Cavett and Jimi Hendrix Experience band members Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox, Hendrix's original interviews with Cavett are shown. In these interviews Hendrix discusses subjects as diverse as his training as a US Army paratrooper and his celebrated rendition of the 'Star Spangled Banner' at the Woodstock festival.

If you have a serious interest in the rock music and (counter) culture of the late 60s / early 70's then this comes highly recommended. Dick Cavett's show was unique on American television at the time in that it gave a serious forum to rock musicians on Prime Time television. Dick Cavett was a an intelligent humorous interviewer who did not pretend to be hip and did not patronise his guests. Instead he laughed with them and at himself while putting artists of the status of Jimi Hendrix , Joni Mitchell , John Lennon , The Rolling Stones ,Janis Joplin etc at their ease and managing to elicit interviews that give a real impression of their personalities and a true flavour of the times.
