19thc Meissen Blue Onion Pattern Porcelain Plate

9 1/2" dia c.1869-1887

Round scalloped shape with deep well.  The famous onion pattern in underglaze blue.  Without the crossed swords in the bamboo cane of the design introduced in 1888 to counter copies by other makers. "That would point to 1888 as the first year & also means that all Meissen onion pattern ware without the swords in the bamboo cane was made before 1888" - Robert Rontgen THE BOOK OF MEISSEN, 1996 p.234.

With the underglaze blue crossed swords with pommels mark of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Meissen on the back.  With 2 short incised lines across the mark.  "From this year [1869] on the quality incisions had to be made across the swords...2nd choice with painting was identified by two incisions across the swords" (op.cit. p.275).  This probably refers to fine sand or pitting in the dark blue underglaze.

No chips, cracs, hairlines or repairs.
