After the huge success of the first series of prints from the 53 Tokaido stations, Hiroshige decided to make nearly thirty different versions of this series. This print, embellished with a kyoka poem, is part of the series called: "Kyoka Tokaido".
Kyoka is a comic style of Japanese poetry, highly prized in the 19th century. Named "mad poetry", it allows freer structures in feet, rhymes and level of two-way language. Also, this style allows words of Chinese origin, vulgar words and wacky signatures. Often the titles of the kyoka, and the names used, parodyed the great classical works.
