A bread bin may be a classic kitchen storage accessory, but when it comes to keeping your bread fresh, it’s really hard to beat. Keeping your fresh loaves tucked away in a cool, dark area is a great way to help them make last longer, and much for successful than storing bread in the fridge, cupboard, or wrapping in plastic film.

This vintage bread bin from Andrew James evokes the classic styling of the 1940s and 50s, combined with a modern edge that will make it look at home in a wide variety of kitchen decors. Available in a range of subtle colours, and with stylish typography on the side, this bread bin looks as great as it performs.

What Is This Bread Bin Made Of?

The large, retro bread bin is constructed from rust resistant, powder coated iron. This makes it durable enough for everyday use but ensures it remains easy to lift and to clean. The rectangular metal bread bin measures 33.5cm x 18.7cm and is 30cm high. The lid features a handle on the top to make it easy to lift off and inside there is plenty of room to store a whole loaf as well as a couple of rolls or baps.

What Else Could I Store In This Bread Tin?

Don’t keep your bread bin just for your sliced white. It’s flexible enough to store everything from breakfast pastries like croissants, through homemade loaves and bread buns, to crackers, biscuits and cookies.

How Should I Clean It?

When it comes to cleaning, this bread bin doesn’t require much maintenance. The exterior surface can be wiped down with a soft damp cloth then dried with kitchen towel. Make sure you empty away any crumbs inside the bin on a regular basis and give it a wash around with warm soapy water to keep it fresh, just make sure it has dried completely before you refill it and replace the lid.

Homemade Savoury Quick Bread Recipe

Quick Breads use baking powder instead of yeast to create the rise. The texture is different to a standard loaf, but the bread is easy to make and this recipe can be adapted and expanded with a range of different ingredients to create your own, unique, sweet or savour quick bread.

Ingredients

  • 300g Plain Flour
  • 1 Tbsp Baking Powder
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 3 Large Eggs at Room Temperature
  • 6 Tbsp Vegetable Oil

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 175C.
  • Line a loaf pan with baking paper and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt and any herbs or spices you want to include.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk and oil.
  • Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ones and use a wooden spoon to stir the two groups together until combined. The more you stir the tougher the bread will become so stir for around a minute to develop the gluten strands then stop. If you are adapting the recipe with other ingredients like cheese, onion, berries or nuts, fold them in now.
  • Pour the batter into your loaf pan and bake for around 40 – 45 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean.
