Joshua Barney was, born in Baltimore, Maryland, and served in the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War. He later achieved the rank of commodore in the United States Navy and also served in the War of 1812. Was happiest, as he once put it, when faced with “the point of the bayonet or the cannon’s mouth.”
