If you need a tool that will remove frets from fingerboards with little or no damage these pliers will do the job.
The fret puller with special flush ground 1/2" jaws, can easily bite the frets, without fretboard damaging.

The fret puller is precisely ground to allow easy grip and removal. The ground top will support the fingerboard and this helps stop chipping of the fretboard along the edge of the fret slot.
Removal is best achieved by lifting the fret by small amount across the fret. This should be repeated until the fret is removed.

AND

2 Chip Stoppers: press down on the fingerboard as the fret puller takes frets out. You get fewer chips, and cleaner refrets.

Now lift the end of the fret, getting under it with the jaws of the Fret Puller. As soon as it starts coming out, slide the Chip Stopper into place; the slot fits around the fret tang. Now you can walk the Fret Puller down the length of the fret, lifting it out as the Stopper protects the wood underneath.
