Antique Burmese 'Zoomorphic' Earthenware Pottery Vessel of a Forest Owl. Burma. Circa 1900's.

Description: A fascinating and simplistic zoomorphic interpretation of a sturdy earthenware glazed pottery vessel, originating from the kilns of Papun (Hpapun) in the Karen State mountainous region of Burma (Myanmar), which is well known for its green ware. Pottery of this type were typically produced by the female population of the villages, and were use locally as utility vessels for everyday life, while others were used as ritual objects in religious ceremonies, or funerary burials.

Fashioned of hand gathered earthen clay, the vessel was modeled in the form of a recumbent Forest Owl, modeled with a globular body, adapted with a flared oval-shaped mouth, and tappering to a small flat foot rim and concave base.

xxx The bulbous body is nicely detailed with incised lines, with the brownish-orange glaze dripped and pools, reaching the lower body, exposing the natural clay bisque at the lower body and footrim.
xxx The vessel was initially hand turned on a potters wheel, artistically shaped, fired in a high temperature kiln, and decorated in a pale green celadon glaze, with a dull sheen, peppered with tiny black flecks of iron.
