This poster comes from the "Pictorial Illustrations" section of a 1906 Webster Dictionary - which is a very thick and heavy book! It includes example drawings of all of the "mechanical powers." Things like the wedge, screw, pulley, and lever - all drawn with people and items appropriate to the period. The image is sharper and clearer than Etsy's picture resolution allows - even the fibers in the old paper can be clearly seen! A great addition to any STEM lover's room or classroom!

··· HISTORY ···

Noah Webster published his first dictionary, titled "A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language," in 1806. In 1807, Webster started two decades of intensive work to expand his publication into a fully comprehensive dictionary. To help him trace the etymology of words, Webster learned 26 languages. Webster hoped to standardize American speech, since Americans in different parts of the country used somewhat different vocabularies and spelled, pronounced, and used words differently. The 1909 edition, a monstrous single volume called "Webster's New International" dictionary, included over 500,000 words!
