Title: Antique Burmese Mandalay Teak Wood Duck Medicine Box. Late Mandalay Period

Teak Wood Hand Carved 'Medicine Box' Duck. Late Mandalay Period.

Overview: A relatively rare and old Burmese Wooden Box in the form of a Mandarin Duck, hand carved of auspicious Teak wood, with a special compartment at the bottom, used to keep medicine pills, or used to store snuff.

The duck is boldly modeled in the shape of a small mandarin fowl, in a floating or squat position, intricalely decorated with rows of closely fitted plumage and tail feathers, bulging eyes, bill-shaped beak, and smooth headdress.

The carving remains in excellent condition, due to a yearly Burmese tradition of re-applied layers of clear lacquer or varnish from time to time. Expect some minor surface degradation due to its age.
