RARE Peter Schlumbohm Chemex Corp Pyrex Fahrenheitor Kettle Glass &Cork. 


This is a true rarity. The Fahrenheitor Water Kettle manufactured by Chemex Corp. New York N.Y. was Designed in 1949 by German born Dr. Peter Schlumbohm (1896-1962) chemist/inventor and a larger than life personality. Part of a larger collection of household products for Chemex Corp. 

Made of one single piece of Pyrex (Borosilicate glass) and cork. Part of the permanent collection that won awards and is now housed in The Museum of Modern Art. N.Y.C and the Smithsonian Institute in D.C.

In excellent vintage condition. It is beautiful. The glass is in excellent shape, no chips or cracks at all, with hand original blown design lines that curve with the glass ( you will see these in some of the pictures, they are not flaws, but part of the design). Please note that there is a small marking (see pictures) at the top of the handle (long spout) which appears to be where the owner put tiny initials to mark their item. It is very light, see picture 7, it appears to say FF3. The cork (steam stopper) is original and excellent condition, very little wear, and only a small mark on it. See pictures. There is some light water marks/reside in the bottom. This is light and should come off with instructed pre-use soaking. 

VERY IMPORTANT: Comes with the WIRE GRID!!! This allows you to use the Kettle on electric stoves without breaking it as thermal shock can cause the kettle to crack. It is hard to find this item with the original grid. 

The brochures and original referral mailing card are in great condition and ARE included in the sale, I see this is rare as most are not.

History


The CHEMEX® coffeemaker was invented in 1941 by the eccentric chemist Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. Throughout his career he developed over 300 patents, ranging from cocktail shakers to automobiles. His focus was on making everyday objects more functional, attractive and enjoyable to use.

When designing the CHEMEX®, Schlumbohm desired to not only make brewing the perfect cup simple, but also to have the vessel be a thing of beauty. Being a chemist, he studied and understood clearly the chemistry behind the extraction of flavor and caffeine from coffee beans.

It was this knowledge that led him to invent the double bonded CHEMEX® paper filters for a perfect extraction every time. For the carafe, Schlumbohm was inspired by the Bauhaus school of design and non-porous labware that would impart no flavor of its own. Using these elements he fashioned the hourglass shape that has now become an iconic part of American history. Made simply from one piece of borosilicate glass and adorned with a wooden collar and rawhide tie, the CHEMEX® is pure in both form and function. It has been recognized and awarded by both the scientific community as well as the art and design communities. The CHEMEX® can be found in museums throughout the world and is included in the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Museum, Corning Museum of Glass and MOMA, NY.

The Museum of Modern Art displayed it as one of the best-designed products in 1943.

The CHEMEX® coffeemaker was also selected by the Illinois Institute of Technology as one of the 100 best designed products of modern times.
