Amadinda Percussion Group - Cage-Marta-Sary

                                HUNGAROTON SLPD 12800 /1987/

Amadinda is Hungary's oldest percussion ensemble; they are known for their collaborations with Iannis Xenakis, Steve Reich, Peter Eotvos, Gyorgy Kurtag, and Gyorgy Ligeti.  Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, colaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Joseph Beuys, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.).  Sary was a student of Endre Szervansky, was heavily influenced by the music of Christian Wolff, and with Zoltan Jeney, Laszlo Vidovszky, Peter Eotvos, Gyorgy Kurtag, and Albert Simon founded the New Music Studio Budapest, an important incubator for Hungarian experimental music.

Great LP of experimental and minimalist percussion compositions performed by Amadinda, plus arrangements of 3 ragtime songs and traditional African tribal drumming. Cage's Second Construction uses warped Latin rhythms and marked the first ever use of the "water gong" technique (dunking a vibrating gong in a tub of water for a unique shimmering effect). The Marta track features the composer playing a Roland JX-8P synthesizer.
