Blue Banana squashes, botanically classified as Cucurbita maxima, are a rare, heirloom variety belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family. The blue-gray squash is a type of banana squash, known for its large and elongated size, and is also called the Guatemalan Blue Banana squash in some regions of the United States.

This rare trailing vine, can produce blue squash 10-14” long. Due to its waxy skin It stores very well and is arguably the best of the three surviving types of banana squash. In terms of taste, Banana squash has a sweet, unassuming flavor, similar to butternut squash. You can use it in any recipe that calls for an orange-fleshed winter squash, such as butternut, acorn, and kabocha.

All squash need warmth to germinate, around 25C. Sow April/May in small to medium sized pots and keep warm until germination. Grow on under cover until 3 true leaves have formed and plant out about 4-5ft apart. These are very heavy feeders and need fertile, well manured soil to do best. Dig in a large bucket of well rotted manure/compost under each plant and water well in dry periods. Stressed plants (too close together or soil not fertile enough) will produce only male flowers or none at all.
