This is the new exciting Clive's Clever Clothespin Capo. Clive invented this originally to use on his 1894 S. S. Stewart Universal Favorite since he needed a reliable fifth string capo idea that would not damage or in any way alter this banjo that has antique value. This capo fits under the string and stays there with a slot for the string and one for the appropriate fret as well. This gives you reliable tone quality and... you know the proper note... (possibly with some minor adjustment... sometimes...) without altering in any way the neck of the instrument. There are three sizes depending on the action of the particular banjo. For a standard bluegrass style banjo for instance the low size is designed, however people have already told me that they need the medium size also for that style when playing further up the neck. It also might be possible to use just the middle one but squeezing it in is awkward when you are only going up a few frets...I recommend the three sizes if, like myself you have multiple banjos and at least one that has nylgut strings or the equivalent... One thing I wanted to add since I am thinking about it is that some people have ordered the small and found out that the medium was actually better. I guess I would recommend that if you want only one, maybe the medium is the best bet. It will pretty much work on almost any banjo... It was the original size. I made the small because with a 5th string with very low action maybe the medium was putting more pressure on the string than was necessary. I made the large for nylon strings which is mostly what I play. The best thing would be if you wouldn't mind having a look at this video:
That way maybe you can get a bit of a sense of what sort of banjo I'm playing anyway... The action on my soft string banjo is pretty high and I use the largest one on all but the 6th and 7th fret where I use the medium one. The action on my steel string one is about like a standard bluegrass one although a raised 5th string nut and bridge does lift it a bit I think... I use the small one for first and second fret and medium for third fourth and fifth. If I wanted a real tight fit I might use the large one on the fifth even though it would probably be a bit hard to get it placed 'cause it would be so tight... Each size also has two "settings"... I am offering what I feel is a very good deal to buy multiple sizes and I guess that is what I recommend, but certainly some buyers will be able to get away with one. The art there is going to be choosing the right one the first time of course... and I can probably help so feel free to write and ask my opinion of what you need for your particular banjo(s). Anyway, you will see that I offer returns and I will tell you right now that I definitely want every customer to be happy with their purchase. Oh... by the way, these are now being shipped with a tracking number unlike before in order to avoid shipping problems. That is the reason for the price increase.
