A wide range of interests and influences are examined, from its African roots to the  record industry that handled the talent and production of the genre.  Each book  is illustrated with photographs or charts and discographies. Each volume has 112 pages.  There are no accompanying recordings. Published both in the  United States and Great Britain by Stein and Day, this series was printed in London in 1970.
