A vellum-bound religious biography from the 17th century L’Histoire de la Vie du Pape Sixte Cinquième (The History of the Life of Pope Sixtus the Fifth). Translated from Italian by Gregorio Leti. Written in French. Two books bound in one volume. Octavo. Published in Paris in 1698 by André Pralard. Vol I 300 pages, Vol II 237 pages.

A detailed engraved frontispiece is opposite the first title page. First published in 1683, this was a revised and expanded edition.

Inscriptions on the flyleaves read: On one page “J. Bosmans Presbyter Antwerpiae 1826,” “2 tomes en un volume”; on the following page “J. Bosmans Presbyter Udensis [sp?] 1822 / qui hunc librum, plutonis regna subibit, nam dedit omnipotens omnia sunta videt.”

Measures 6-1/2 x 4-1/8 x 1-1/2 inches.

In good condition. The title and date are handwritten on the spine. Covers are intact, with some darkening and small stains on the exterior. Binding is tight. Pages have some small isolated stains, a tiny bit of darkening on 1/4” of the outer edge, and a few dog-ears, but they are very clean overall. The date 1648 is written in pencil on the title page (not related to the publication dates). No notes or marginalia. See images for details.
