Yak Wool: The New Cashmere [The Guardian: December 2010]

Yak Wool:

Yak is an animal that lives high in Himalayan mountains and is accustomed extremely low temperatures. The down layer of wool that is soft and next to the skin is brushed out each spring and is then made into yarn for weaving. It is soft like the high altitude goats that give us cashmere and keeps you very warm. Yaks live at a staggering 13.000 to 16,500 ft. above sea level.

The Yak wool is non-allergenic. There is no lanolin in the fiber; thus, making it easy to clean and is hypoallergenic. So anyone that is allergic to sheep wool can wear or cover oneself with a Yak Shawl or Throw. It’s naturally anti-bacterial too, so unlike synthetic garments it will stay odor-free for many days at a time. Unlike sheep's wool, the scales of yak fiber are in a waved mosaic pattern, resulting in a very smooth fiber that does not itch.

Photos are an estimate of the actual colors and patterns but are more accurate than this description...these colors are difficult to describe and are presented to accent the photos - Geometric Tribal Patterns, depending on the lighting and the quality of your computer monitorAs the reviews mention, the colors are actually far more vivid and deeper than the photos.  The Photos are taken in floodlight to show the brightness of the colors and are more muted in shadow.

Additional Information:  The descriptions we use for our merchandise are based on our supplier’s representations to us.  We do not manufacture our own merchandise so we rely on what we are told by our suppliers; who in turn relies on the weavers; who in turn relies on the yarn merchants, etc.  Unless a seller makes their own yarn and manufactures their own merchandise in their shop, the seller is unaware of what materials are actually included in the yarn used to weave the shawls that we make our clothing from.  When a supplier advises us that he knows or believes that the yarn is a mixed blend, we note so in our descriptions.  If our supplier advises that the yarn mixture is predominately Yak or Sheep wool, then the merchandise is described as Yak Wool or Sheep Wool or some combination of both.  If the supplier informs us that they believe the merchandise is a blend of Viscose or Polar Fleece, we note that it is a blend of these materials plus the Yak and Sheep wool in our descriptions.  We are unable to determine the actual % relationship of materials that maybe included in our merchandise without a costly lab test, which would have to be added to the price of our merchandise and make selling it prohibitive.  We do not note anywhere in our product descriptions that an item is “100%” or “Pure” unless we have a strong assurance that it is possibly a true statement.  If you require any additional information about the material content of the items we sell please send us a message.
