Title: Khmer Bronze Naga Protected Buddha, Angkor Wat 'Bayon' style. 17/18th C. Cambodia.

Description: A superb Bronze cast Khmer figure of the Buddha sheltered by the Naga serpent ‘Muccalinda’, in the style of Bayon, Angkokian Peroid. The statue was excavated from temple ruins north of the Siem Reap province, Cambodia.

The Buddha sits in the 'Virasana' pose, meditating on three graduated coils of the serpent king 'Muccalinda', protected by the hooded canopy of its seven-headed cobra. Both hands overlap one another in the 'Dhyana' mudra, the attainment of spiritual perfection, gesture. Buddha’s profile is slender, wearing a long monastic robe covering the left shoulders. The face portrays a serene downcast expression, ridged eyebrows connect in the middle above almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, wide mouth, and elongated earlobes drape to his shoulders. The head is covered in vertical rows of tightly matted hair, rising to a conical-shaped 'Ushnisha' finial. The seven-headed cobra canopy is incised with circular patterns, along with grooved bands following the overlapping coil pattern of the snakes body, as is the hooded reverse carved with incisions leading to each of the cobra’s heads, surrounding a central 'Wheel of life' medallion, carved in high relief. The serpents wavering tail is carved in relief, forming the shape of the rectangular base.

The sculpture has a dry, un-altered surface, with a superb verdigris patina, penetrating the surface of the bronze and mottled variations of encrusted soil deposits from the environment in which it was maintained.
