Established by King Edward III on April 23, 1348, to the glory of God, the Blessed Virgin and the Holy Martyr George, the patron saint of England, with the aim of "uniting a certain number of worthy persons to do good deeds and revive the military spirit."

The emblem of the order is a garter with the motto «Honi soit qui mal y pense» (Middle French for "Shame on him who thinks ill of it") in gold letters.
Members of the order wear it on ceremonial occasions.

The medallion is in color enamels of Saint George on a horse striking with a spear of the winged serpent (dragon).
