One of the world's most desirable and expensive marbles, Portoro stone comes from Portovenere, an island in the La Spezia province in the Liguria region in northern Italy.  It was a favorite choice among sculptors and foundries for use as pedestals for sculpture during the Art Deco period, but has been quarried since Roman times and is used for all kinds of decorative and functional objects.
