Ricky Powell (1961-2021) was an American photographer who documented the early years of hip-hop’s ascendance as well as a host of other subcultural scenes and the celebrities and fringe characters who populated New York City. His subjects were varied:  Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat; Madonna; Run-DMC; the Beastie Boys; a pre-superstar Cindy Crawford in a nightclub bathroom; people sleeping on park benches. His photographs have been featured in The New York Times, the New York Post, the Daily News, The Village Voice, TIME, Newsweek, VIBE, The Source, Rolling Stone, among other publications.
