    ABOUT SUBLIMATION INK


    Sublimation Ink is a specialised product used for printing images onto garments or sublimation treated products (i.e. mugs).  Once an image is printed onto 'sublimation paper' the image is transferred using a heat press.  The application of heat and pressure causes the dyes in the image to convert to a gas.  The heat applied to the object being printed causes the 'pores' of the object to open.  Rapid removal of the heat causes these 'pores' to close and the gas (now trapped in the 'pores') converts back to a solid, leaving the coloured image.  These sublimation inks are suitable for use in any Epson Inkjet or Brother inkjet printer as they use an electronic print head system (Piezo).  They are not suitable for use in HP or Canon printers,  which use a  thermal style head that can cause the ink to sublimate within the head.

    The printed output will appear dull compared to printing using 'normal' printing inks, this is normal with sublimation prints.  It goes without saying but sublimation inks are not suitable or used for 'everyday' printing and typically the printer is used solely for use with sublimation inks.

    Please be aware that all sublimation inks use what is commonly referred to as a 'generic' profile.  This means the output is accurate but subtly different on each Epson or Brother series of printers.  What does this mean?.  Well, both Epson and Brother printers slightly change the physical colour of their Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (& Light Cyan and Light Magenta for Epson) inks when they bring out new series of printers.  For example the CMYK colours of the Epson 200 cartridges are different to those of the Epson 252 series cartridges.  A generic profile is based on the old 82N cartridges (Epson R290, T50, 1430 etc but also pretty much identical to XP700-XP860 series 273 and 277 cartridges) and means the colours are accurate but subtle tweaking may be required for truly photographically accurate colours.  The reality is 99% of people doing home sublimation are happy with the output and probably wouldn't notice a difference.  For those who want to investigate further, simply google "making printer icc profiles" and colorimeter devices like the i1Profiler from X-rite, or easy to use programs like Printfab.  Rihac do provide an ICC profile for their inks in an EcoTank printer and this can be provided upon request after purchase.

All sublimation inks are profiled for use in Epson  printers, however almost every series of Epson printers (hence cartridges)  have slightly different physical colours.  So for example the BK, C, M and Y colours are physically different from one printer series to the next.  This means you never have 100% colour accuracy using any sublimation inks.  As a generalisation the inks are very close but some users choose to create their own ICC profiles or 'tweak' the colour output in the printer colour settings.  Rihac have made an ICC profile for Epson EcoTank printers which can be provided upon request after purchase of this product.

The printed output must be transferred hot using a heat press at a temperature between 180-220 degrees.  Time and temperature will vary depending on type and nature of material which transfer is applied.  When used to print on fabric, sublimation inks will only work on synthetic materials (must be less than 10% cotton) unless you are printing onto a transfer syle specialist paper.

Dye sublimation inks have a higher viscosity and overall consistency to OEM inks (normal ink used in general printing).

 

It is widely accepted that the life of a printer is reduced when using it with specialised inks such as sublimation.

 

It is also recommended to use the printer frequently or run weekly head cleaning cycles to reduce the chance of print head blockages caused by dried inks.

 

It is typically harder to clean a print head blocked with sublimation inks.
