1853 Anglo-Saxon 1ed The
Ancren Riwle Female Anchorite Monastics Prayers Nuns
The Ancrene Wisse, or Ancrene Riwle, was a 13th-century
instructional guide for female monastics living under the anchorite rule.
Anchoresses would completely disassociate themselves with society to focus on
prayer and asceticism in one solitary location. This guide was collected,
edited, and reissued in 1853 by James Morton who included both modern English
translations of the ancient Anglo-Saxon English. It includes a thorough history
of the Ancrene Riwle – the origins of the sacred quotes, possible authors, and
the use of the semi-Anglo grammar.
