The Cairo was one of the first American ironclad warships built at the beginning of the Civil War. On December 12, 1862, while clearing mines from the Mississippi river, Cairo struck a naval mine that was detonated by volunteers hidden behind the river bank. She sank in just 12 minutes. There were no casualties.

Fun fact: The remains of Cairo can be viewed at Vicksburg National Military Park with a museum of its weapons and naval stores!
