Spirit House Shrine Zodiac Figures:

Title: Rare Antique Gilded Bronze Thai Zodiac Altar Statue. Temple Relic. Buri Ram Province, 19/20th C.

Overview: Extremely Rare bronze Thai Temple Angel mounted on one of the 12 zodiac animals, the Snake, his ‘Vahana’ or vehicle. He is dressed in royal attire, wearing a tall headdress bound by an inter-connected crown, while holding attributes in both of his hands. The Cobra snake with its head raised, displays its wavy body. The bronze was originally decorated in a hand-painted gold and black lacquer pigment in traditional temple fashion by Buddhist Monks.

Description: These figurines were typically placed within miniature “Spirit Houses” style Temples, decorated with an assortment of figurines, animals, and garlands of floral arrangements.
XXX ORNATE THAI SPIRIT HOUSE - The house, called “San Phra Phum” or shrine of the guardian spirit are a significant part of Thais tradition of spirit worship. They are a miniature replica of a traditional style temple or home, where a deity is believed to live, usually constructed of wood and elevated from the ground on a platform.
XXX Many Thais believe in these spirit house rituals, which are thought to derive from a mixture of ancient animistic belief and Brahmanism (an early form of Hinduism). The elaborate shrines are believed to shelter spirits that “own” the land at the location of the home, temple, or business. They are built in hope that residents and workers will enjoy good fortune. It is also believed that appeasing the spirits facilitates happiness, prosperity, and a peaceful life. Similar spirit houses are also found in neighboring countries – Cambodia, Laos, and Burma.
