Title: Rare Antique Meditating Lao Chieng Luang Buddha, Temple Relic, Laos 18/19th C.

Overview: An extremely rare and exquisite Meditating Chieng Luang Buddha, acquired from a temple precinct in northern Laos, beautifully rendered in an exalted profile, intricately carved with exacting detail. This particular bronze image was created by Lao people, temple blessed, and consecrated by Buddhist Monks prior to its placement within a temple structure. It is a sacred piece identified by the gold-leaf stamp on his chest. Statuary of this type were considered to be one of most innovative and earlier representations of the Buddha, portrayed in two parts, carved out at the top where the Buddha would be inserted in the elevated lower section. The figure, including the elevated pedestal, measures 19.75 inches (50.00cm) in height.

Description: A spiritual image of the Buddha meditating on a stylized throne, seated cross-legged in the 'Virasana' pose, one leg atop the sole of the other foot, with the right hand held in the 'Bhunmisparsa' mudra, the earth touching gesture, with the hand positioned near the right knee, and the fingers reaching downward towards the ground. Typical with this gesture the left hand is positioned in his lap in the Dhyana mudra.
XXX Buddha is covered by a Sanghati Robe worn diagonally over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and arm bare, graced by a wide flap draped to the mid-section. Buddha features an oval face, with downcast eyes open, incised curved eyebrows meet above a prominent nose, and contoured lips with an exalted expression. The head is covered in rasp-like hair curls, surmounted by a hemispherical 'Ushnisha', and topped by a tall conical flame finial. Other features - pierced eyes, broad smiling mouth, elongated Lao style earlobes, long hands with fingers of equal length, and supported by a multi-level base which allows the image to be inserted into the elevated altar.
