O little town of Bethlehem how still we see thee lie! " Sterling Silver Christmas Medal

Superb two sided mirror-like proof finish sterling silver medal.

One of the best-loved of all Christmas hymns, O Little Town of Bethlehem, served as the inspiration for this medal designed by David Bonner and sculptured by Jane Lunger.

The words for this lovely carol were written by Phillips Brooks, a well-known American cleric, who visited the Holy Land in 1865.  The day before Christmas he left Jerusalem on horseback and approached Bethlehem in the quiet starlit darkness of Christmas Eve.  Three years later, withing to write a Christmas carol for the children of his congregation, he recalled the scene and set down the verses of O Little Town of Bethlehem.  The church organist, who had been asked to compose the music, awoke one night with the melody ringing in his head.  He quickly jotted it down and the carol was presented at the following day's services.

The medal is marked sterling on the edge.   It is dated 1975.
