Up for sale, a 1969 Gibson SG Special in perfect working order with a gloss Cherry nitro lacquer finish and Vibrola tailpiece. An exceedingly rare left-handed example and one of the last SGs of the '60s, this SG Special has an authoritative acoustic voice that translates well through the P-90 pickups with rich harmonic overtones. Loaded with the original P-90 pickup pair, the tone is growly and biting in the bridge position and round and smooth at the neck. This SG has healthy sustain and midrange presence, with a dynamic, glassy quality that lends itself to ripping drive and sparkling cleans. The guitar is featherweight at 6lbs 8oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with low action, accurate intonation, and a fresh set of 11-49 strings.

The one-piece mahogany neck has a very chunky and substantial C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulders in every register and ever more heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .870" deep at the 1st fret and 1.030" at the 12th. The guitar benefits from a recent professional refret with medium jumbo wire, retaining the same width as the original frets yet with appreciably more height and crown for easy bending and long fret life. The new frets show virtually no wear, playing cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width. The tuning machines were substituted for other strip tuners in the instrument’s lifetime, and the faint imprint of the tuners and larger washers are faintly visible. A genuine vintage set of Kluson Deluxe double line tuners have been installed, perfectly matching the originals and functioning as intended. While the serial number dates to 1969, features are consistent with previous model years with none of the Norlin-era cosmetics seen later in '69 (volute, "Made in USA" stamp).

On the body, the original P-90 pickup pair is intact, with a replacement quartet of 500k pots and original tone caps. Hardware includes a modern Faber bridge, matching the function of the original with the saddle compensated for a plain G string. The bridge is paired with a modern left-handed short-frame Vibrola tailpiece, again perfectly matching the footprint of the original hardware and actuating smoothly for quick warbles and modestly deep dives. Plastics are all original including the multi-ply pickguard, witch hat knobs, and P-90 pickup covers. There is strum wear and additional mottling of the plastic on the neck pickup cover.

The original Cherry nitro lacquer finish has aged to a middle ground between Cherry and Walnut, with plenty of honest playwear including heavy lacquer checking and various dings and finish chips, largely clustered on the back and lower bout body edge. There is finish wear on the headstock perimeter, and prominent finish checking and wear through the finish on much of the neck profile.
