The five-part song cycle Château de l´âme, composed by Kaija Saariaho, a Finnish modern music composer living in Paris, was completed in 1995. Nacho Angulo, a visual artist living in Madrid, felt that he belongs to the spiritual world of this song cycle. He wanted to make his own visual interpretation of it. At the same time he wanted to find out what the castle of the human soul contains. In the film Nacho Angulo uses about 15 000 pieces of birch tree to produce his interpretation of Kaija Saariaho´s series of songs. During the long working process his mind wanders in the home of the birch tree in different seasons of the year; in Finnish birch tree forests where he seeks, in the guise of a little ´birch girl´, the mythical background of the birch tree and the tree´s connection to ancient spirits and to the essence of soul, as well as Kaija Saariaho´s connection to this spiritual landscape of her homeland and the important landscape of her childhood. The artists don´t know each other, but Kaija Saariaho, working in Paris, gives an answer to this search through a description of the basic intention of her own music; of her attempt to travel, by composing, to a timeless space and to an unphysical space where the soul could live and dwell. The film depicts this encounter in a space crossing the borders of different cultures. In this space, Nacho Angulo´s starting point for his working process, based on modern music, is also a deep personal grief work that necessitates the contents of the castle of soul to be found.
