"BMW 750i: A Dream Becomes Reality

The BMW 750i is the first car in the world with a l2-cylinder catalytic converter engine. In addition, this is the first and only German 12-cylinder for almost 50 years (since 1939, when the last l2-cylinder engine was manufactured by Maybach). We should also add that BMW's first 12-cylinder was produced in 1935 - an aircraft engine.

Despite its particular exclusivity, this power unit with its legendary concept is quite appropriate for our day and age. For it combines the philosophy of small moving masses - relatively small cylinders mean low piston weight and, accordingly, perfect motoring refinement - with all the finesse of modern technology. This provides a perfect symbiosis of the demands BMW applies to a top-of-the-range power unit: outstanding power and performance, particularly compact design and proverbial running smoothness. Indeed, this is also the ideal concept for improving fuel economy and reducing exhaust emissions. Last but certainly not least, everybody who has seen this power unit in the uncluttered engine compartment is fascinated by its aesthetic looks and overwhelming appeal.

In November 1982 BMW's development engineers discussed the 12-cylinder for the first time. it became clear very soon that the new top engine was not to be formed out of two of BMW's famed straight-sixes simply doubled up to provide l2 cylinders. No, this was to be a completely new power unit starting from the bottom bolt in the oil sump. A dream for every engine designer, particularly for the fortunate engineer whose company name has the word "Motor" in the middle!"
