It is also necessary when using the SB-50DX, SB-23, SB-22s, SB-22, SB-21B, SB-20 or SB-15 as a master flash unit, or when using the SB-11, SB-14 and SB-140 as a master flash unit with TTL Remote Cord SC-23, because none of these units have a TTL multiple terminal.
