fascinating 19th-century survey on aquatic wildlife. This scientific
treatise provides 32 beautifully hand-colored engraved plates depicting a variety
of fish native to the Guianas located in Northeast South America such as
porcupine acanthicus, shark-tailed hypostoma, black doras, tiger pimelodus,
flat-headed platystoma, piranha saw-bellied salmon, carp, fishing implements,
and much more! Also included is a portrait and memoir of Swiss traveller and
Orientalist, John Lewis Burckhardt.
