A VERY ATTRACTIVE TRIBAL VINTAGE KARABAGH RUG, NORTH CAUCASUS

The medallions called ‘Tosbaga’ which means tortoise with squares with double T motifs in between called ‘Sainak’ among human and animal figures against an abrashed navy background framed by angular flowers border giving the carpet more depth as well as adding a subtle sense of movement. The weaver(s) took inspiration off tortoises from the nearby Caspian Sea. However you perceive it, its a beautiful old Lenkoran rug from the Caucasus. The brash in the field has produces a shifting depth of colour that creates an illusion of gently moving water in a deep lagoon.
