2014 UK 1 Oz Silver £2 Britannia Mule Error w/BritanniaObverse -NGC MS69 PL.

Britain's Royal Mint has been striking its 1 oz Silver Britanniacoin since 1998. In 2014 it struck its very first 1 oz lunar Year ofthe Horse coin. The coins are the same size and weight and bothfeature Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The onlydifference on the obverse is the Britannia has a crenelated edge andthe edge for the lunar horse is smooth. The smooth obverse die forthe Year of the Horse was used for the Britannia. This type of erroris called a "Mule".

CoinHighlights:

Itis now known, and has been officially verified by the Royal Mint, that this 'mule error' coin was struck in the production of a batchof Britannia's destined for the bullion market sometime betweenNovember & December 2013.

Itis the Obverse (Head side) that makes the coin a mule coin. A 1ozSilver Britannia Obverse design should contain a castellated patternround the inside edge of this side of the coin, as it does on theReverse (Tails) side. However, with the release of the new UK Lunar£2 silver coin, new dies were produced for the obverse of that cointhat although very similar to the obverse of the Britannia Obverse donot have the pattern round the inside edge IE. the inside edge isplain. Somehow during the striking of the batch of Britannia coins, the dies for the Obverse of the UK Lunar coin were used on thisparticular batch of Britannia's, thus turning them into a mule coin.
